DAVID SEIDNER

He was 19 when his first cover was published and just 21 at the time of his first solo show in Paris. For the rest of his magnificent career, the American fashion photographer David Seidner blurred the lines between fashion and art. Taken by AIDS at the height of his powers in 1999, Seidner left a stunning body of work in his wake. Drawing from some of the photographer's favourite themes (such as fragmented bodies, nudes, and portraiture), this retrospective of his personal work demonstrates the artist's trademark combination of formalism and aesthetics. The results often feel closer to sculpture or painting than photography as we know it. His nudes come straight out of Greek antiquity while a series of orchid photos proudly declare their debt to Monet's Water Lilies. To be sure, Sneider's work is elegance personified, but their magic lies beneath the formal perfection in the gentle pulse of mystery and desire. MS

Until 1 Feb. Tue-Sun, 11am-6pm. 5/3€. Fondation Pierre Bergé Yves Saint Laurent, 3 rue Léonce Reynaud,16th. 01.44.31.64.31. www.fondation-pb-ysl.net
