NNEKA
There seems to be something going on with the youth of Nigeria at the moment; the natural heirs to Fela Kuti's throne are making themselves heard. Keziah Jones and Ayo have already made their presence felt, but even they could be on the verge of being dumped by the tidal wave created by Nneka. Expanding the notion of Keziah's own blufunk (a marriage between blues and funk), Nneka introduces an activist's blowtorch to the flammable mix, and the result goes from latent heat to sheer explosion in terms of her performances. Witness ‘Heartbeat' the first, sensational, single from this year's album, No Longer at Ease, a track that has been doing heavy rotation on Nova recently. It's a sensational vibrato vocal performance that grafts Laurie Anderson onto Lauren Hill to the tempo of The Cure's '10.15 Saturday Night', topped off with fierce drum breaks and sublime piano - all in three minutes! As if her fierce talent weren't enough, she's also a looker, with a wild, unruly afro. It's hard to find a hipper artist on the scene at the moment. CG
Nneka, après avoir collaboré avec Sean Paul et fait les première parties de Patrice, nous présentera bientôt son deuxième album , après "Victim of Truth" aux ambiances Soul/ Hip hop, parfois teinté de Reggae qui ne lui correspondait pas vraiment, tant sa musique transcende les genres. Avec Nneka, c'est à une Soul plurielle qu'on a droit, avec comme valeur ajoutée le militantisme du Reggae, la rage du Hip Hop et parfois même le côté sombre du Trip Hop... tout en étant bien singulière, à l'image de cette artiste qui déteste les étiquettes.
CLUB NME #3
Settling into its new monthly residency, Club NME - ‘The British Party In Paris' - changes tack from last month and goes more rawk with the likes of The Ghost Frequency, a kind of Green Day type crew trying to play their instruments harder and faster. While Iglu & Hartley are Californians doing the exact opposite, looking like surfers and playing teen surf pop. Sonny J sounds like the natural heir to The Avalanches cut-and-paste music, with a little bit of the Jackson 5 thrown in. Kitsuné faves Punks Jump Up bring the dance action, as well as Radioclit, Ed Banger resident DJ Vicarious Bliss, then the Tsugi (magazine) Crew. CG
Une fois n'est pas coutume c'est un groupe californien, le quintet Iglu & Hartley, qui ouvrira la danse. "One of the hottest bands of the moment" selon NME. Tout est dit. En pleine tournée européenne, affichant complet dans la plupart des villes traversées, ils honoreront le public du Club NME Paris de leurs hymnes pop flamboyantes et de leur énorme tube 'In This City', qu'il vaut mieux connaitre avant les autres pour briller en société. Une courte pause menée de mains de maîtres par les DJs du Tsugi Crew puis on assistera à un changement d´univers. Les fringues, l'accent... Les signes ne seront pas trompeurs, nous seront bien face à un groupe londonien. The Ghost Frequency se donne un air de dur qui ne fait pas illusion deux minutes face à la générosité de leur live. Leur son pousse invariablement les gens à danser. Après tout, que peut-on faire d'autre à l´écoute de 'Money On The Fire'? Sonny J, protégé de (et remixé par) Mirwais, aime les défis. Comme à son habitude il nous fera le plus grand plaisir en live d'inventer, de créer un son éternellement renouvelé, à en faire pâlir le duo The Avalanches. Punks Jump Up c'est une jolie histoire. Une première sortie en 2003 qui sans même l'appui d´une distribution se retrouve en rupture de stock en une semaine. Puis c´est l´escalade. Les commandes de remix pleuvent. Lo-Fi-Fnk, The Gossip, Digitalism, Yelle... Kitsuné les signe. Logique. Et puis le Club NME Paris, encore plus logique. Un français et un Suédois se rencontrent à Londres... Ca démarre comme une mauvaise blague mais c'est bien au contraire une heureuse surprise que la réunion sous le nom de Radioclit de ces deux fous de musique. Mélanger, couper, ralentir, décaler... torturer la musique pour au final la sublimer. Voilà la signature de ce duo sans égal. Ils laisseront la conclusion à Vicarious Bliss - du label EdBanger, qui assure la direction artistique de l'événement avec Garance Productions. Finir en beauté, il sait faire.
SWELL
Swell formed in San Francisco in 1989 and under the leadership of David Freel emerged as a major band of the American indie rock scene in the 1990s. Freel's voice is a Lou Reed sound-alike, though he usually employs it in much tamer ways than his likeness, often only a decibel above a whisper. There's something grey, haunting, sometimes psychadelic, and deeply human in the lyrics and slow acoustic-layered compositions of Swell. Ever sat around with friends, listening to captivating music, looking at each other, unable to speak a word? You follow? Compare to Smog, Silver Jews and Will Oldham. Originaires de San Francisco, Swell sortent un premier album éponyme en 1991. Avec leur second ...Well? et le suivant 41 en 94, ils s'installent durablement comme une référence incontournable folk rock sur la scène mondiale. Après de trop longues années d'absence, David Freel, leader de ce groupe culte et majeur, revient avec Swell et un nouvel album South of the rain and snow et repartent pour une tournée très attendue.
OF MONTREAL
Of Montreal has mainly been the baby of talented Athens, GA native Kevin Barnes. Critics are mostly agreed that OM has been mostly fantastic. In last year's release Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? glum was never so much fun. Dark lyrically, but one would never guess by all the frenzied, highly danceable tempos. In the past year, OM have been experimenting with idiosyncratic song structures and styles ranging from surf to funk, while somehow maintaining the pop base that their fans adore. The highly awaited follow up, Skeletal Lamping, is set to be released 21 October but will grace the sound system and the many ears of L'Elysée Montmartre even sooner. JH
A la tête d'Of Montreal se trouve un homme : Kevin Barnes. Tête pensante et leader du groupe américain membre du collectif Elephant 6, le fantasque Barnes écrit et enregistre la grande majorité des chansons de son groupe depuis une décénnie. Bien que seul membre du groupe à l'époque, Barnes sait qu'il souhaite l'appeler Of Montreal en hommage à une ancienne petite amie arborant un tatouage Of Montreal. A son arrivée à Athens, il fait la rencontre de personnes qui feront parti du collectif Elephant 6, Derek Almstead et Bryan Poole.
CALEXICO
Named after the Californian border town, Calexico wear all the possible influences of its particular geography. A type of indie folk-rock, their music simutaneously has influences ranging from Mexican music to south-western hillbilly, all in an indie-rock arrangement, where tumbleweed rolls under desert skies lit brightly by the constellations. Well known to French audiences, due to frequent visits and their previous collaborations with French musicians, the band have just released their sixth studio LP Carried to Dust, which continues with a singular romantic and hybrid sound, accompanied by the plaintive wails of Mexican-style brass. La ville américaine à l'origine du nom de groupe illustre parfaitement l'éclectisme du groupe : un côté road-movie US, savant mélange de rock, blues, jazz et country mais aussi des sonorités traditionnelles sud-américaines oscillant entre mariachis et musiques latines... Leur nouvel album intitulé Carried to Dust est sorti le 8 septembre dernier. Un ovni du rock américain à apprécier en live!
